Lesson 4 of 8
Position Sizing and Risk Per Trade
The single most important lesson: position sizing and risk per trade
Nothing else in this course matters if this lesson does not become a habit. Risk management is not about being right more often than you are wrong — it is about making sure that when you are wrong, one trade cannot meaningfully damage your account.
The idea
Before you open a position, decide two things first: how many dollars you are willing to lose on this specific trade if it goes wrong, and where your stop loss will sit. Only then do you calculate how many lots to trade — the lot size is the output of that decision, not an input you guess at.
The formula
`` position size (lots) = risk amount (in your account currency) divided by (stop distance in pips times pip value per lot) ``
Worked example
- Account balance: $1,000
- You decide to risk 1% on this trade = $10 (this is an example of the arithmetic, not a recommendation — the percentage you choose is yours to decide, and it should be small enough that a string of losing trades does not put your account in danger)
- Your analysis puts a sensible stop 20 pips away from your entry
- On EUR/USD, 1 pip on a full standard lot = $10/lot
Lots = $10 divided by (20 pips times $10/lot) = $10 divided by $200 = 0.05 lots
If you open 0.05 lots and the trade hits your 20-pip stop, you lose exactly 0.05 times 20 times $10 = $10 — the number you decided on before you opened the trade, not a surprise afterwards. If instead you had guessed and opened 0.50 lots on the same 20-pip stop, the same stop-out would cost $100 — ten times your intended risk, from the same market move and the same stop distance. The lot size is what turns a 20-pip move into either a manageable $10 or an account-damaging $100.
On the platform
Use this lesson's task to put the formula into your hands rather than just your head: open a small demo position — between 0.01 and 0.10 lots — and practice sizing it deliberately rather than picking a round number because it felt right.
Practice task
Open a position on your demo account.
- Minimum size: 0.01 lots
This lesson is completed by doing, not by clicking — the platform checks your own trading account for real evidence.
